Collection: Book of Shadows Art Collection

About the Collection

My art collection "Book of Shadows" is inspired by the Grimoire of a Witch. The idea was to have aesthetic, frameable artworks that look like they were torn out of such a book. Some of the pages contain information while others mainly contain pictures.

The information included in the pages was collected through researching several sources. Almost every magical practice is different and information varies depending on who gives it, where they learned it and where they come from. Since many of these things can't be scientifically proven anyway I can never 100% guarantee the accuracy of the information included in my artwork. These things always have to be taken with a grain of salt and people from all over the world keep discussing who is "right" and who is "wrong". I strongly advise anyone to do their own research, especially when it comes to things that will be ingested. Always be 100% sure you know what you are doing.

History

(unpaid ad because I mention brands)

When in 2016 I first started drawing digitally I found it hard to begin. Before that I had already tried drawing digitally using Sketchbook on my laptop and a Wacom tablet but I couldn't work out how to realize my ideas and soon gave up. When Apple released their first iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil I had the idea that this more intuitive approach to digital art could work for me. This was true, but in the beginning I didn't really have many ideas for what I could draw.

This changed when I created a Book of Shadows artwork for the first time in 2017. The first one was "Herbology I", still available in my shop today. I was intrigued and had an actual idea and goal in mind for the first time, and I began drawing more and more of them, getting to know the software along the way.

The first versions of my Book of Shadows artworks were heavily inspired by Harry Potter. I wanted them to look like they were ripped out pages from a book you'd find in the Hogwarts library. Back then, I created several prints that aren't available anymore among the revised versions.

Over the years I learned to use my drawing program better and my art style changed and improved which is why, at one point in 2020, I decided to redesign my favourite pieces of the collection to be able to offer a more refined design.

I can't with 100% certainty say whether this collection is finished or might evolve further. I could imagine adding the one or other page to the collection. But I am now more interested in painting physically - who knows, maybe the collection will face another revision at some point in time and I redo them in various physical mediums..
